"In Japan [1958-1960], Rothman also discovered beautiful color effects produced by sand on clay slabs fired in large wood-burning kilns. He returned to Otis in 1960 and developed a technique, seen in Sky Pot, 1960, which achieved a similar range of color. Rothman recalls that he mixed sand with colored oxides on a piece of paper, then rolled the clay onto the paper, transferring the image onto a vessel form...The abstract imagery, evoking clouds, points to his interest in nature, which was strengthened during his stay in Japan."
(Mary Davis MacNaughton, Revolution in Clay, 1994, pg. 66)
