Object Description
Processional with the emperor. The anti-government nature of the Satsuma Rebellion instilled the fear that representations of the rebellion would be disruptive to the national peace. However, the respect for Saigo was overwhelming; he was admired for his protest against arbitrary government and was seen as a paragon of traditional values. To satisfy this popularity, the new Meiji government erected a statue of Saigo in Ueno Park in Tokyo, seen on the lower right-hand corner of this lithograph. He is represented as a man of the people in his casual clothes with his dog at his side.
