Object Description
"This print depicts the famous actor Onoe Kikugoro V [also known as Onoe Baiko V] (1844-1903) impersonating the Buddhist monk Iwakura Seigen in the play “Hana fubuki.”  In the scene, Seigen dwells over his tragic decision to break all vows of chastity for the love of a courtesan. The monk’s lean, bent frame intersects with the snow-laden pine branches in the image, making reference to the weight they both bear, be it physical or psychological."
