Commentary

Triptych; 3 panels not cojoined. When the miltary dictator Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) was a child he was called "monkey pine" because of his ugliness. Here Yoshitoshi presents the boy at center asking some soldiers if he could join them. He will eventually rise from a footsoldier to become a brilliant general. This is one of several triptychs Yoshitoshi made to document the lives of famous warriors.
