Object Description
Takiyasha, the third daughter of the rebel Taira no Masakado (died 940) is shown carrying a sword, bell and torchlight, as she prepares to destroy Oya no Taro Mitsukuni, who had been sent to inspect the ruins of Masakado fortress following its destruction in the Tengyo Revolt when Masakado had declared himself emperor of northern Japan. This story was popularized in 1836 by the kabuki play Shinobi yoru koi no kusemono, also titled Masakado. Inset: Masakado standing before the giant toad, which is summoned up by Takiyashi in her battle with Mitsukuni.
