Object Description
Color woodblock print with an image of ferry boats on the water. Seperated from Maisaka by 2 miles of ocean and Lake Hamana, Arai was approachable only by ferry. The station was also famous for the inspection barrier (sekisho), which performed as severe a check of travelers as that of the Hakone Barrier (cat. 115). Here, the shogun's officials particularly watched for the transport of guns, and also tried to apprehend members of daimyo families attempting to flee from Edo.
Hiroshige depicts two ferries that left Maisaka and are approaching Arai. On the bank, the flat, long building on the right side is sekisho. Many houses of the town appear on the left side.
The second ferry's sides are covered with a crested drapery, and it displays two upright lances ornamented with feathers, signifying the passengers' status. Obviously a daimyo is aboard. Another ferry follows, carrying his servants. Hiroshige captured the moment when one of them stretched his arms and gave a grotesque yawn.
