Commentary
“Accounts of Recent Personalities” by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), 1887
The artist Yoshitoshi provided illustrations for the daily newspaper Yamato shimbun to publish each month as a special supplement for subscribers. Like colorful “Sunday funnies” in American newspapers, these woodblock prints were designed to help sell newspapers, which was a newly imported medium for the Japanese. This series was a mixture of historical figures and contemporary celebrities, such as Danjuro IX shown in the kabuki play “Subscription List / Kanjincho.”

Object Description
Yoshitoshi provided illustrations for the newspaper Yamato Shimbun in the 1880’s; he reported on heinous crimes and also featured celebrities of the kabuki stage, such as Ichikawa Danjuro IX (1838-1903). Like colorful Sunday funnies in American newspapers, these woodblock prints were designed to help sell newspapers, which was a newly imported medium for the Japanese. Ichikawa Danjuro is depicted here in the kabuki play Kanjincho (The Subscription List).
