Object Description
Image of the thirties actress Ruth St. Denis on a theatre set. According to St. Denis, her desire to combine dance with foreign cultures began in 1904, when she came across an advertisement for "Egyptian Deities" cigarettes. Inspired to perform an all-encompassing interpretation of Egypt at the height of its glory, St. Denis created "Egypta," one of her most famous full-length dance-dramas. Performed over 2,500 times throughout St. Denis' career, "Egypta" featured a cast of over 15 dancers dressed in extremely elaborate costume and make-up, making it one of St. Denis' most ambitious early productions.
