Object Description
During the 1870s, Duveneck's realism consisted primarily of genre portraits. The Old Sea Captain, painted in Munich, represents the culmination of this realist style. Characterized by bold, paint-laden strokes, minimal use of color, and strong value contrasts, the visage of this skeptical and aloof old man thrusts out from the murky blue depths of the background, disdainful of both the world and the viewer. Typical of this period in Duveneck's art, the subject is a stongly individualized character. - Arthur D. Stevens
