Commentary
Edward Weston, an important figure in 20th century photography, is known for his images focusing on the figure and form of the subject. He began his career as a portrait photographer and this photo of Ruth St. Denis is an example of his earlier work. Before 1920, Weston often featured both a soft focus and neo-romantic style, following the popular manner of photography at the time. This photo of Ruth St. Denis is an excellent example of Weston’s work during that era. –Marie Angeles '13

Object Description
This staged portrait, which presents a glimpse of Ruth St. Denis "as herself" rather than in costume or character, reflects the sentimental, and somewhat delicate style of Weston's pre-1920's work. Because St. Denis's hair went white at the unusually young age of 26, she often used it as a dramatic and unusual accessory to compliment her wardrobe.
