Commentary
Edward Weston is a renowned 20th century photographer, known for his photographic formalism of emphasizing composition and abstract form rather than content. Early in his career, however, many of his photographs were in a pictorial style, which mimicked painting by capturing the subject with a soft focus. This is the style in which he photographed Ted Shawn, a dancer and actor who was married to Ruth St. Denis (also pictured in the show). The harsh lighting and theatrical pose captures Ted Shawn’s dance interpretation of the 2 3rd Psalm. -Alex Trimm, Turk Intern 2011-2012
This work is also known as "Ted Shawn as David'.
