This painting compares favorably with several Xie Shichen attributions in American collections. Xie Shichen was a professional painter from Suzhou who worked in a variety of styles and often did large scale landscape paintings.
On the outside of the scroll, in pencil: Landscape. Ming.
Signed Gusu Xie shichen, along the left edge, 3/4 of the way down. Two square red ink seals stamped by signature. No date inscription.
Black ink and red wash on silk, with an off-white silk brocade mounting.
Vertical hanging scroll depicting a landscape after a poem by Du Fu. Vast, hilly landscape with many buildings within the hillsides and in the valleys. There are two men, one with a large load, walking along a path in the lower left.
