Commentary
There is a painted starburst of lines on the bottom of the statue. This Buddha of the Western Paradise is seated in deep meditation, his right hand raised in a gesture of peace and protection while his left hand (now missing) would have been opened in compassion and charity.

Object Description
The seated Amida Buddha of the Western Paradise is the central figure of Pure Land Buddhism, one of the most popular sects of Buddhism in Japan. At the time of their death, sincere believers of the Amida Buddha are escorted to the palace of the Western Paradise by Amida and his entourage. The Buddha sits on a large lotus throne supported by a base with floral detail and pillars. His arms are held in front in the vitarka mudra, and he is also depicted with eyes closed in serene meditation.
