Eisenstaedt became a professional photographer in Berlin, Germany. His work was influenced by the photography of Erich Salomon. In 1935, Eisenstaedt immigrated to the United States, specifically New York City. There, he waas hired by Life Magazine as part of its first team of photographers. In his time on the magazine, he created over 2,500 picture stories for Life. Ninety of his photos were used on the cover of the publication.
