Yohei Watanabe was born in Nagasaki city. After he graduated from Kyoto Municipal Art and Crafts School when he was only 17, he started to draw illustrations for "Hototogisu", "Chgaku Sekai," "Bunsho Sekai," etc. He married Fumiko Watanabe in 1909 and changed his surname to Watanabe. Until 1912, he made numerous illustrations in various publications and received awards from the prestigious Bunten. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 22.

His art career lasted only about 6 years but he achieved stardom comparable to Yumeji Takehisa. His talent is still remembered by numerous exhibitions and commemorative art publications today.
