Shinko Araki
contemporary
Japanese,
b. 1960
"Shinko Araki was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1960. While living in Maui for eight years, she began using vines and leaves in several series. They were growing in her backyard hanging from the eucalyptus trees.
"In order to make her compositions, she uses several copper plates, varying the size of each. She cuts the vines and leaves and incorporates them into the design. She uses some handmade paper to break up the sharp edges of the copper plates.
"Shinko Araki is one of the emerging stars in the world of contemporary Japanese prints. She has a wonderful sense of design, color, and space. Even her signature is a work of art."
