Son of photographer James H. Black, Sean Black has created his "Dad" series (2009-2010) to capture his father's last years. The series was exhibited for his thesis show under the title "The Night My Father Cried."

Sean orginally planned to print from his father's old negatives, photographs taken in the 1950s when James Black was a young GI and photographer for the U.S. Army's "Stars and Stripes." The project grew, and Sean turned the camera on his father.

From his artist statement:
"A creative inheritence commenced. A bittersweet transference of my father's photographic passions began unlocking emotional doors. The introspective nature of these portraits directs a reconciliation of my inner struggles with my father's painful disappearance and his inevitable death.

This body of work is an ongoing commitment to preserve my father's vanishing memories, illuminate his simple daily wonderments, and explore the nature of our relationships. Like a family album, it is a visual memento of our time together as we stuggle to face the full circle of life and cement our bonds as both artists and as father and son. Ultimately, this project is about embracing the fragility of life while I silently gather the courage to say goodbye."
