Eva Rubinstein was born 1933 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Polish parents touring South America. She was raised in Paris until her family emigrated to the United States in 1939 and became a U.S. citizen in 1946. After briefly attending Scripps College, she transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles to major in theater. She danced and acted in New York and Europe through the 1950s and embraced photography in 1967 studying under Lisette Model, 1969; Jim Hughes, 1971; Ken Heyman, 1970; and Diane Arbus, 1971. Reflecting on her early photographs, Rubinstein says, "Discovering photography provided me with the first irrefutable proof that I had actually been somewhere, seen something, made something real." Her collection of work contains portraits, documentary, nudes, and interiors. Rubinstein is still active in New York City.
