Leonel López Sáenz
Contemporary Mata Ortiz Potter
Mexican
Leonel began working with clay in 1993, and in a short time he was producing red ollas with well-painted black designs. Then he developed an unusual sgraffito technique, etching landscape and animal scenes into the surfaces of his pieces. These have become very popular with traders, and other potters have adopted this style, called calcado in the village. Leonel is married to Elena Rodríguez of the well-known Rodríguez family (Manuel, Oscar, etc.) and he learned to pot from them. As is true of other young potters in the village, he is a better painter than potter. Therefore, he often buys pieces from others to paint and etch. His work appeared in the Exhibits USA "Potters of Mata Ortiz" exhibition, 1999-2001.
