Ramiro Veloz
20th Century Potter
Mexican
Ramiro Veloz Gutierrez lives next door to Juan Quezada. He makes a beautiful ware with very thin walls and detailed painting. His wife, Sylvia Casas, painted the pots until she died of cancer in July 1991. About a year and a half later, Ramiro's twelve-year-old son, Ramiro, Jr., began painting his father's pots. Young Ramiro has talent; so much so that he now signs all of the work that he and his father produce "Ramiro Veloz Casas," omitting the "Junior." Unfortunately, Ramiro, a robust, handsome man, suffered a stroke that left him partially paralized and unable to work. Since then Ramiro Jr. has filled the gap, making and selling pots to support the family.
