Max Read was born in 1943 in El Centro, California. He trained as a painter, at the University of Miami (1962-1964), and the University of Washington (1964-1968). He studied ceramics at the University of California, Fullerton, in 1970-1973, under Jerry Rothman. After graduating from Fullerton he stayed on as a teaching assistant in the ceramics department.
