Ohara Shoson
Modern Shijo Wooblock prints
Japanese, (active 1877–1945) Ohara Koson; Ohara Kanazawa.
Shoson's original name was Ohara Matao. He studied with the Shijo-style painter Suzuki Kason. Under the name of Koson he made Russo-Japanese War prints in 1904 and many small kacho prints published by Matsuki Heikichi of Daikookuya for export. In 1912 he changed his name to Shoson and dedicated himself to painting, but may have designed a few more prints for Daikokuya under the name of Koson. In 1926 he resumed kacho hanga production. His works were published chiefly by Watanabe Shozaburo, but he was also published by Nishinomiya Yosaku and Sakai-Kawaguchi. Hundreds of Shoson bird prints were exported to the U.S. Shoson used the name Hoson on works published by Sakai-Kawaguchi.
