Amano Kunihiro was born in 1929 in Hirosaki, Aomori prefecture. He graduated from the Aomori Prefectural Technical School, and was self-taught in hanga. He first exhibited with Nihon Hanga Kyokai in 1955 and Kokugakai in 1956. He became a member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai and Kokugakai in 1957. He exhibited in the first through the fourth Tokyo Biennales, from 1957 to 1964. He has been represented in several international exhibitions including Krakow, Pistoia, Buenos Aires, Frechen, Bradford, Lugano, Paris, and Sao Paulo. In his early prints he often used exposed wood grain with images of fantastic birds or fish. Later works include large bold abstractions of simple shapes in intense red and green as well as elegant small prints of fanciful birds.
