Japanese Go: Hokuei, Sekka, Sekkaro, Shumbaisai, Shumbaitei, Shunko, Shunkosai, Shun'yo-sai.
Ukiyo-e printmaker who worked in Osaka. Pupil of Shunko Hokushu. With other pupils of Hokushu, Hokuei settled in Osaka and played a prominent part in a group of designers of theatrical color prints. Together with pupils of Kunisada, he belonged to what was known as the Osaka group. After 1829 he used the go Hokuei, usually signing Shunkosai Hokuei. He also frequently used a seal reading "Fumoto no Yuki" (Snow at the Foot of the Mountain), a reference to his teacher, who used a seal reading "Mount Yoshino." Good at actor prints and also as an illustrator of storybooks.
