H. T. Motoyoshi
20 c. Photographer
American
Motoyoshi was a Japanese photographer who had a studio in San Francisco in the early 1900s. He was commissioned by dancer Ruth St. Denis, for $5, to take the photograph, which is in our collection at Scripps College. She had Motoyoshi take a portrait shot of her in Egyptian costume, inspired by a poster that she had seen. This image in her mind inspired her creation of the dance project "Radha." Motoyoshi did good work, but was relatively unknown.
