b. June 28, 1577 in Siegen; d. May 30, 1640 in Antwerp, Belgium. Flemish painter and designer; the greatest and most influential figure in Baroque art in northern Europe. His masters were three fairly undistinguished painters in Antwerp: Tobias Verhaecht, Adam van Noort, and Otto van Veen.
