17 c. Baroque Painter, draughtsman
Flemish,
(1577–1640)
b. June 28, 1577 in Siegen; d. May 30, 1640 in Antwerp, Belgium.
Flemish painter and designer; the greatest and most influential figure in Baroque art in northern Europe. His masters were three fairly undistinguished painters in Antwerp: Tobias Verhaecht, Adam van Noort, and Otto van Veen. His style was largely formed after a trip to Italy in 1600 (returned to Antwerp in 1608). He was appointed Court Painter to Archduke Albert and his wife, the Spanish Viceroys in the Netherlands. His subjects were predominently religious, and he was a devout Catholic.
