William Satchwell Leney

b. Jan. 16, 1769 in London, England; d. Nov. 26, 1831 near Montreal, Canada.
Most of his career spent in New York. As a youth apprenticed to an engraver named Peltro W. Tompkins, the historical engraver to Queen Charlotte and drawing master to the royal princesses. During his career in England he executed numerous portraits, magazine illustrations, and plate engravings. At the age of 36 he took his family and moved to America, doing mostly large plates of scenery. He was a very lucrative and successful artist during his lifetime. He retired in Canada, in Longue Pointe, near Montreal.
