Scottish, (1756–1823)
The leading Scottish portrait painter of his time, active mainly in his native Edinburgh. On leaving school he was apprenticed to a goldsmith, then worked as a miniaturist, and was self-taught in oils. He painted directly only canvas, without preliminary drawings, with a vigourous, bold handling. Knighted; His Majesty's Limner for Scotland.
