b. 1819 in Kilburn (near London), England; d. 1908 in England
English portrait painter in the Victorian establishment. Also painted and lithographed sporting pictures. Son and pupil of stationer and lithographic publisher. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. Taught drawing with John Ruskin and Dante Rossetti. Exhibitions of his portraits at the Royal Academy from 1848-91.
