Ukiyo-e painter and illustrator, born in the Shinano Province. He first studied Chinese Ming and Ch'ing painting, and then moved to Edo to study under Toyokuni. He later became a follower of Hokusai. He illustrated many books during his career. Though his work was popular and he was prolific, his works are now rare.
