Toshusai Sharaku
Edo Ukiyo-e Printmaker
Japanese, (active 1794–1795) Go: Sharaku, Toshusai.
Ukiyo-e printmaker. Nothing is known about him save that he lived in Edo. He has been identified by some scholars with Saito Jurobei, but there is no concrete proof of this. He specialized in portraits of actors, usually large scale okubi-e, frequently on a mica background, down with sharp, satirical wit. All of his prints (159 known) were done in ten months in 1794-1795 and are unique in the annals of Japanese art. For so stunning an artist, it is curous that so little information about him is available.
