Hiroshi Seto
Contemporary Ceramist
Japanese, b. 1942
Seto is Japanese potter who earned his degree in ceramics at the Kyoto Colege of Fine Art in Kyoto, Japan, and has exhibited internationally. He resides in the well known folk pottery town of Mashiko near Shoji Hamada and Tatsuzo Shimaoka. Seto often makes his own clay from local materials, and most of his glazes are wood ash type. Combined with wood firing, his pieces have a very organic, natural texture.
Seto was a visiting artist at Southern Colorado State College in 1972 and a visiting lecturer in ceramics at Indiana University later that year. Whereas in the 1960s he worked in vases and vessels, his works developed into large sculptured, circular forms. These abstract forms were derived largely from Mentori pottery-faceted cuts used on teacups and flower vases.
