David Winfield Scott was born in 1916 in Massachusetts. He studied art in New York with John Sloan and in California with Millard Sheets. He taught at Riverside College (1940-1942) and at Scripps College (1954-1963). He is mainly known for his abstracted landscapes in watercolor. In 1952 he was president of the California Watercolor Society, and in 1964 he became director of the National Collection of Fine Arts in Washington, D.C.
