After Nicolás, Macario Ortiz Estrada is the best known of Los Hermanos Ortiz of Barrio Porvenir. Most of his pots are lustrous black-on-black pieces sometimes with a slight reddish cast. He does not use reduction firing. He achieves this surface by painting the entire pot with powdered graphite and almagre, then firing it in an oxidation atmosphere. Almagre is a red ocher the Ortiz brothers dig from an old mine on the way to Ciudad Juárez. Macario has also experimented with green and blue colors. He has traveled to the U.S. and to Ensenada for exhibitions, and his success has enabled him to build the only two-story house in Mata Ortiz. He is the businessman of the family, and made all of the arrangements for the band for which he was the lead singer. His work appeared in the University of New Mexico Art Museum exhibition in the spring of 1995, and in the Exhibits USA "Potters of Mata Ortiz" traveling exhibition, 1999-2001.
