John Francis Murphy
Late 19th c-Early 20th c Painter
American,
(1853–1921)
John Francis Murphy was born in New York, and was first employed as a sign painter in Chicago. He showed an interest in fine art, and became a self-taught artist, moving to New York City in 1875. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design soon after. His style was based on the close observation of nature. In 1885 he built a studio in the Catskills. His landscapes became more poetic, representing the tonalist or Barbazon influence of artists such as Wyant and George Inness.
