Thomas Moran
Late 19th c-Early 20th c Painter
American, (1837–1926)
A painter and etcher, born in Lancashire, England. Moran was brought to the United States at the age of 7. He began his career as a wood engraver in Philadelphia. He taught himself to paint in watercolor and oils. His brother, Edward, also taught him what he had learned from formal art instruction. In 1862 he went to England to study the masters. He returned to New York in 1872. His subjects were often taken from places he visited and studied, such as Venice, Yellowstone, Niagra, and Long Island. He died in Santa Barbara, California.
