American, (1893–1975)
b. 1893 in Somersetshire, England; d. 1975 in Hackensack, NJ. Came to the U.S. in 1908. Studied at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Served in France in World War I; after the war returned to the art scene in Southern California. By 1926 he was an art critic for the L.A. Times. Did etchings and taught part-time. Retired from the paper in 1958, and turned to etching, and later watercolor, full-time. Known for his depictions of rural California.
