James McKinnel was born in Nitro, West Virginia and studied ceramic engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received an M.S. degree.  He also studied at the Ecole Metiers d'Art in Paris, Penzance School of Art in Cornwall, and Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.  He has taught at the University of New Hampshire and has a studio in Deerfield, Massachusetts, where he makes stoneware.  McKinnel participated in the Ceramic Nationals from 1954 through 1966.

Jim and has wife, Nan McKinnell, are utilitarian potters, producing bottles, planters and teapots with their signature decorative element - brush with wax resist and oxide washes.
