b. June 27, 1913 in Montreal, Canada; d. 1980 in St. Louis, MO
Mostly self taught, aside from a stint at Otis in California; honorary MFA from Boston Univ. 1970. Artist for Federal Art Project, 1935-41, did several New Deal murals. In the early 40's his worked bordered on surrealism; he later turned to abstraction and was a leading figure in the birth of Abstract Expressionism in the early 1950s. His later works contained more social commentary. Works in Guggenheim NY; Tate, London; Whitney, NY; NY Metropolitan.
