Thomas Wilmer Dewing

American, (1851–1938)
Dewing was born in Boston. He went to Paris in 1876 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Acdemy Julian under Boulanger and Lefebvre. In 1879 he went to New York City, and was elected to the Society of American Artists in 1880. He taught at the Art Students' League from 1881-88, and was a founding member of "The Ten" in 1898. He was known as a painter of women in interiors and of landscapes, and was highly influenced both by Whistler and Oriental art.
