Paul Gardner Darrow
20th century Contemporary Painter
American, (1921–2019)
Darrow was a student of Sueo Serisawa (born in Yokohama, Japan) at Claremont Graduate School in the 1940s. He taught at Laguna Beach School of Art in the 1960s. The artist developed a gestural abstract style in his work, which often revealed his interest in Asian philosophy. His career included being Chairman of the Art Department at Scripps College and a faculty member at the Claremont Graduate School's Art Department for 37 years. Darrow also taught for ten years at Otis. His work reveals his life-long interest in Eastern calligraphy and philosophy, and his work is a combination of action and meditative contemplation. He worked in many mediums, but was most at home with collage.
