American painter; created realistic scenes of American life. One of the leading artists of the Regionalist group; dramatized and romanticized life of the Middle West and the sagas of the American pioneers. Did murals at the Department of Justice in Washington, D. C., and the State Capitol Building in Topeka, Kansas. Works at the Whitney in NY and the Art Institute of Chicago. Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin from 1936-1946.
