Mary Stevenson Cassatt
Late 19th / Early 20th c. American Impressionism Painter
Cassatt, Mary Stevenson
Mary Cassatt is widely considered one of the leading female impressionist artists. Though born in America, Cassatt lived most of her life in France, and was part of the circle of French Impressionists. She trained in painting at the Pennsylvania Academy, and in Paris. She was above all a figure painter, in whose work line, form, and composition were always of greater concern than light and color. Remaining unmarried and childless herself, most of her compositions were of mothers and children. Dict. Amer. biog.; Encyc. world art; Fielding's Amer. ptrs.; Hale, MARY CASSATT; RILA/BHA; WWW Amer.
