20th century Contemporary Ceramist
Marlow Bartels was born in Los Angeles, California in 1948, and lives in Long Beach. He received his B. A. at California State University in Long Beach in 1971 and his M. A. at California State University, Fullerton in 1974. His functional pieces are made to be used, yet whimsical and far from the mundane. To overcome the inherent fragility of large ceramic pieces, he builds the basic structure of steel, ferro cement, mortars and grout, and then surfaces them with tile. His influences include Antonio Gaudi, Simon Rodia, and the architectural tile work of Southern California in the first part of the 1900's.
