Jacques Barthélemy Appian was born August 28, 1818 in Lyon, France, and died in France on April 29, 1898. He studied at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, with Corot and Daubigny. Appian first showed at the Salon in 1835. His work followed the tradition of the illustrations of Ville-d'Avray. Over his career, Appian produced a large body of work (paintings, charcoal drawings and prints), won several awards, and was chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur.
