"Tommy" is a term for a soldier in the British army, commonly used during World War I. During the war, German soldiers would call out "Tommy" across noman's land if they wanted to speak to a British soldier. Multiple sources are cited as the origin of the term, some dating as far back to a young soldier named Tommy Atkins who died in combat in 1794. During World War II, the Germans still referred to British soldiers as Tommy.
