In this play, the ghost of Taira no Atsumori (1169-1184) appears to a young boy at the Ikuta Shrine (indicated by the framework at left) near the battle site of Ichi-no-tani where Atsumori was killed. The boy had been abandoned as a baby, but years later his mother appears to reveal that he is the son of Atsumori. On a pilgrimage to venerate his father, the ghost comes to tell his son of the battle and then must leave, to return to the hell of constant warfare.
