Object Description
"Night Rain at Narumi" shows Imagawa Yoshimoto (1519-1560) at the Battle of Okehazama. The thick outlines and contorted facial features give this warrior a ferocious appearance. The dramatic stance suggests influence from the Kabuki theatre. The flatness of colors on the costumes and the linear treatment of rain also recall graphic characteristics of theatre posters. The principal figure is identified in a cartouche on the print as "Inagawa Yoshioto," and not Imagawa Yoshimoto because government censorship laws at the time strictly controlled references to historical figures.
