Object Description
Late ninteenth century Impressionist oil painting of a pasture with grazing cattle. Upon his return in 1874 from a painting trip in the West, Wyant suffered a stroke that paralyzed his right hand. He learned to work with his left hand, producing smaller and more intimate views of nature. Pasture Hills was painted at Arkville in the Catskills, the artist's home for the last three years of his life. By this time, Wyant's right side was completely paralyzed, and the painting, done from memory, suggests a profound melancholy in its sense of transience.
