Utagawa Toyohiro studied under Utagawa Toyoharu (1733-1814), the founder of the Utagawa sub-school, whose studio he entered about 1782. He was given the name of Utagawa Toyohiro and allowed to use his master's Go of Ichiryusai. In the field of printmaking he designed hosoban and surimono and helped the development of the landscape print, which influenced his pupil Hiroshige. Bijin and landscapes were his most common themes. His major works, designed mostly in the 1790s are comparatively rare. His style is close to that of Eishi, his figures having the same attenuated grace. In the history of ukiyo-e he was chiefly distinguished for having had Hiroshige among his pupils. Toyohiro also studied Kano painting; his paintings were quite elegant, and he was a good landscape artist. He was also an able illustrator of story-books.
